Your seed phrase (12 or 24 words) is the backup of your wallet. Whoever has it controls your funds from any device, and there’s no way to undo that.

Where to keep it

  • On paper, handwritten, in order, somewhere it won’t get wet or lost.
  • Two copies in two places if the amount matters.
  • On metal (purpose-made plates) if you want it to survive fire or water.
  • For larger amounts, a hardware wallet keeps the keys off your computer.

Where never

  • A photo in your phone’s gallery.
  • Notes, email, WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Drive or iCloud.
  • A shared password manager or a document on your computer.
  • Any website or form, even one claiming to be “support” or “verification”.

The 5 most common scams

  1. Fake support. You post a question in public and someone DMs you “from the team”. They ask for your phrase or send you to a site to “sync your wallet”. It’s theft.
  2. Unsolicited airdrops and NFTs. A token or NFT appears in your wallet with a link to “claim”. Signing lets them drain you. Don’t touch what you didn’t ask for.
  3. Cloned sites. Search ads that copy Phantom, Solflare or exchanges. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark.
  4. Blind signing. Read what a transaction asks for before approving. If you can’t tell why a site wants to move all your tokens, cancel.
  5. “I’ll double your SOL”. Nobody gives money away. If you send, it doesn’t come back.

Hardware wallets

A hardware wallet keeps the keys on a separate device; every transaction is confirmed by pressing a button on it. Even if your computer has malware, the attacker still needs the device.

Always buy from the official store, never second-hand: a tampered device can ship with a phrase the seller already knows.

If you think your phrase leaked

  1. Create a new wallet with a new phrase.
  2. Move everything to the new address right away.
  3. Never use the old wallet again.
