How to Buy Solana (SOL) in Canada: Registered Platforms Only

Several big global exchanges have left Canada. The ones still serving Canadians must be registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA). Use only those: if a platform isn’t registered, you have little protection if something goes wrong.
Check any platform on the CSA's list of authorized crypto trading platforms before you deposit. Fees and funding methods change; confirm them on each platform's site.
1. Pick a registered platform that supports SOL
| Platform | Good for |
|---|---|
| Kraken | Lower fees on Kraken Pro, wide coin choice |
| Coinbase | Simplest app for a first purchase |
| Wealthsimple | If you already invest there; crypto sits next to your other accounts |
| Newton | Canadian-only platform with a simple app |
Shakepay is popular but, as of this writing, only offers Bitcoin and Ether, not SOL.
2. Verify your account
You’ll need government photo ID and proof of address. Registered platforms are required to verify every customer. Then turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app.
Canadian platforms also have to apply purchase limits to some coins for customers who aren’t “eligible” investors. You may be asked a short knowledge questionnaire. That’s normal.
3. Fund it
Most Canadian platforms take Interac e-Transfer or bank transfer. Card purchases, where offered, cost more.
4. Buy SOL and move it to your wallet
- Buy SOL (use the advanced/“pro” screen and a limit order to pay less).
- Create a Solana wallet (guide) and copy the address.
- Withdraw SOL on the Solana network. Send a small test first.
For long-term holdings, a hardware wallet is the safer place.
5. Taxes in Canada
The CRA treats crypto gains as either capital gains or business income, depending on how you trade. Selling, swapping or spending SOL counts. Keep a record of every buy, sell and transfer (download your platform’s history every year). This isn’t tax advice.
Common questions
Why can’t I use Binance or Bybit? They stopped serving Canadians. Using an unregistered platform means no Canadian regulator oversight of how your money is held.
Is there a minimum? Usually a few dollars.
