Ledger vs Trezor for Solana: Which Hardware Wallet to Buy

A hardware wallet keeps your private keys on a small device. Every transaction has to be approved on the device itself, so malware on your computer can’t move your SOL on its own. Ledger and Trezor are the two best-known brands, and both work with Solana.
The short answer
- Pick Trezor if open-source firmware and simplicity matter most to you.
- Pick Ledger if you want the widest app support and a secure-element chip across the whole range.
Either is far safer than keeping a large amount on an exchange or a phone wallet.

Ledger Recover caused debate when it launched in 2023 because it showed the firmware can export a seed if you opt in. It’s optional and off unless you sign up. If that bothers you, Trezor’s open-source approach is the cleaner fit.
Setting one up for Solana
- Buy from the official store only (Ledger, Trezor), never second-hand or from a marketplace reseller.
- Set it up with the official app and write the recovery phrase on paper. The device will never show it again.
- Connect it to Phantom or Solflare (“Connect hardware wallet”).
- Send a small amount of SOL first, then the rest.

If you hold a small amount you’d be fine losing, a phone wallet is enough. A rough rule: once your crypto is worth more than the device costs several times over, buy one.
