Kraken vs Coinbase in Canada (2026): Which Should You Use?

Kraken and Coinbase are the two big international exchanges that still serve Canadians as registered platforms. Both sell SOL, both take Interac e-Transfer, and both let you withdraw to your own wallet. The real difference is how much you value simplicity versus lower trading costs.
Confirm both on the CSA's list of authorized crypto trading platforms. Fees and funding methods change; check each official page before you deposit.

Ease of use
Coinbase wins here. The app walks you through buying, and sending to an external wallet is straightforward. Kraken’s app is also simple, but to get its better pricing you’ll want Kraken Pro, which looks like a trading terminal. It isn’t hard, it just takes ten minutes to get comfortable.
Costs
Neither exchange should be judged by its simple Buy button. On both, the advanced screen (Kraken Pro, Coinbase Advanced) with a limit order is the cheaper path. Compare:
- the fee on instant buys vs the advanced screen,
- any fee for your deposit method (cards cost more on both),
- the withdrawal fee for SOL.
Check the two fee pages linked above on the day you buy; we don’t quote numbers because they change.
Funding
Both accept e-Transfer from a Canadian bank. Coinbase also advertises EFT and PayPal; Kraken lists domestic wire and debit card, among others (Kraken deposit options). For most people, e-Transfer is the simplest.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons | |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Lower-cost Pro screen; wide coin choice; larger bonus ceiling | Two interfaces; bonus needs CA$200 deposit and trade |
| Coinbase | Simplest app; EFT and PayPal; small bonus with low minimum | Simple Buy is the expensive way to buy |
Sign-up on either
- Create the account on the official site or app.
- Verify with government photo ID (and possibly proof of address).
- Answer the investor questionnaire; purchase limits on some coins are normal in Canada.
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app.
- Fund by e-Transfer and make a small first buy.
Then move your crypto to a wallet you control
Whichever you choose, don’t treat the exchange as a savings account. Create a Solana wallet, withdraw on the Solana network, and send a small test first. For larger holdings, see Ledger vs Trezor.
FAQ
Is Kraken or Coinbase cheaper in Canada?
It depends on how you buy. Using Kraken Pro or Coinbase Advanced with limit orders is the cheaper route on both. Compare the official fee pages on the day you buy.
Which one is safer?
Both say they are Restricted Dealers across Canada and registered with FINTRAC. Your own security habits (two-factor, address allow-list, not leaving savings on an exchange) matter just as much.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many people keep two accounts so they have a backup if one is down or a coin is unavailable.
