Coinbase is the app most people try first, and for good reason: it’s hard to get lost in it. In Canada it operates through Coinbase Canada, Inc. This review covers who it suits, how sign-up and funding work, the referral bonus, and what to watch on fees.

Is Coinbase registered in Canada?
Coinbase’s Canadian site states that Coinbase Canada, Inc. is a Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories of Canada and is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (as of October 2026, per coinbase.com/en-ca). Its Canadian user agreement says the same.
Who Coinbase is for
- Good fit: a first purchase, a clean app, and an easy path to withdraw to your own wallet.
- Less ideal: if you only ever use the simple Buy button, you’ll pay more than necessary. Learning Coinbase Advanced fixes most of that.
The referral bonus
At the time of writing, new customers in Canada get CA$30 in Bitcoin after their first purchase of CA$30 or more (terms apply; check the offer on sign-up). That’s a modest amount, and it doesn’t require a large deposit.
How sign-up works
- Download the official Coinbase app or go to coinbase.com and create an account.
- Verify your identity with government photo ID; you may be asked for proof of address.
- Answer the questionnaire Canadian rules require (purchase limits can apply to some coins for non-”eligible” investors).
- Turn on two-factor authentication. An authenticator app or security key is better than SMS.
- Add a payment method and make a small first purchase.
Funding in CAD
Coinbase’s Canadian homepage says Canadians can add cash with Interac e-Transfer and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), or buy directly with PayPal (as of October 2026). It also describes those cash top-ups as free. Card or PayPal purchases are convenient but usually cost more than buying with cash already in your account, so check the total before you confirm.
Fees: what to check
Coinbase’s costs depend on how you buy. Read the official Coinbase fee page and compare:
- the simple Buy flow vs Coinbase Advanced (maker/taker fees),
- the cost of paying by card or PayPal vs cash balance,
- the network fee when you withdraw.
For anything beyond a small amount: add cash by e-Transfer, open Coinbase Advanced, and use a limit order.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories (per Coinbase) | Simple Buy costs more than Advanced |
| Simplest app for beginners | Card and PayPal purchases cost more |
| Interac e-Transfer, EFT and PayPal | Some coins have limits for non-eligible investors |
| Easy withdrawals to your own wallet | Fewer advanced tools than Kraken Pro |
Moving crypto to your own wallet
Coinbase holds your crypto for you while it’s on the exchange. To take control of it:
- Create a Solana wallet and copy the address.
- In Coinbase, choose Send, paste the address, and pick the Solana network for SOL.
- Send a small test first, then the rest.
